SportsAgentBlog.com hosted the most recent edition of the Carnival of the NBA. If you aren’t already familiar with Carnivals, it’s a collection of links from around the blogosphere — usually presented in some unique manner. This edition is titled, The Final Draft, and that’s what this edition is all about.
The Los Angeles Lakers may not want to lose the face of their franchise, but Kobe Bryant looks like he’s on his way to another big market. Although the Lakers hope to repair the damaged relationship, Bryant doesn’t want to return. The team apparently talked with the Chicago Bulls about a trade likely involving a combination of Ben Gordon, Chris Duhon, and Luol Deng.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have shopped Kevin Garnett around this summer, to the Boston Celtics among others. Also, the team may have talked with the Phoenix Suns about a trade for Amare Stoudemire.
Rashard Lewis may lose out on millions after a contract error could keep the small forward from opting out of his contract with the Seattle Sonics. Lewis’ agent may have mishandled the paperwork, which may keep him from opting out.
Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan thinks the team will keep Andrei Kirilenko. The disgruntled Russian expressed a lot of concern about getting the ball and budding star Deron Williams during an interview with a Russian website. While players rarely win against Sloan, he’s softened up over the past couple years and doesn’t want to blow up the situation.
Our NBA Draft Preview section has covered about one-third of the NBA teams owning a draft pick, but that still leaves plenty of teams not covered by their respective bloggers. If you’re team is in the Southwest division or one of the teams not yet covered, please contact Daily Basketball if you’re interested in contributing. Visit the preview section for more details.

Vladimir Radmanovic now has 500,000 reminders to tell the truth next time he injures himself. The Los Angeles Lakers fined Radmanovic $500,000 after he lied to the team about a separated right should that occured while snowboarding in Utah over the All-Star break. Radmanovic told the team the injury happened after slipping on ice, which wasn’t exactly the full picture. The $500,000 fine is one of the largest fines ever imposed on a player.
Greg Oden plans to wait until after the season ends before announcing his much-awaited decision whether or not to enter the draft. Oden seems fairly optimistic about returning, but the fact that he takes the minimum classes needed at Ohio State University, and would be a top-2 pick makes that unlikely.
Though the timing is unknown, Ray Allen will need surgery on his left ankle within a couple months. Some reports say he could end his season early, but he may play out the rest of the season.
The Portland Trailblazers‘ GM and team president, Steve Patterson, unexpectedly resigned from his position with the team.
Henry Abbott of True Hoop (and ESPN!) brought attention to the NBA’s legal highlight video maker. The NBA has required that YouTube remove all NBA content from the site, which becomes a royal pain for bloggers. Though they have created an official NBA page, it’s ridiculous to think the content will be the same.

Thanks to an dislocated shoulder injury to Dwyane Wade, the Miami Heat must now fight to stay into the eighth and final playoff spot. Head coach Pat Riley has challenged Shaquille O’Neal to step up and lead the team, but O’Neal likely can’t make a big enough difference if Wade sits out for an extended period of time. Some reports have said Wade could need season-ending surgery, others think the NBA Finals MVP will return in the next week or two…
The NBA trade deadline typically disappoints the fans of most teams, but Thursday’s lack of activity just about sets the record for futility. Three trades occurred on the day of the deadline, involving four players — none of whom will have an impact on their new team.
The Los Angeles Lakers have provided Phil Jackson with a record six-game losing streak. While that’s not quite a Boston Celtics-like slump, neither team has recently lived up to their titles as previously being dynasty franchises.
There’s been a lot of rumors and trade talk (though not a lot of action) around the NBA since this past All-Star weekend, but many bloggers have said RIP to former Boston Celtic Dennis Johnson. To make the Celtics’ dismal season even worse, Johnson died of cardiac arrest at age 52 while coaching his D-league team.
One year ago from yesterday, the Daily Basketball (then CenterCourt Hoops) blog was created. Consider this new, free basketball theme we’ve installed the gift from Daily Basketball to its readers…In the past year, we’ve posted approximately 150 times. Not quite as daily as True Hoop, but nevertheless…

After being named a participant in the dunk contest, most people chose Gerald Green as the favorite to win the competition. While Nate Robinson may also have gathered in some high scores, the real contest was between Green and Dwight Howard.
Not only did Nate Robinson still take several attempts to complete some dunks, the general consensus about Robinson is that the dunks are only impressive because of his lack of size, which provided him with an unfair advantage against Howard. The sticker dunk at 12′ 6″ by the aid of Jameer Nelson may have been the most impressive dunk, making up for the NBA’s disapproval to raising the rim with hydraulics, while Gerald Green opened up the contest with a decent dunk off a side-of-the-backboard oop from Paul Pierce.
Unsurprisingly, Tyrus Thomas had a short lived night in the dunk contest.
Mehmet Okur may have made the only solid defensive play in last night’s All-Star game. Shaquille O’Neal brought the ball upcourt with several crossover dribbles (loosely termed). After it became apparent that Okur didn’t plan on budging, O’Neal launched an ugly jumper that was lucky to hit rim.
The NBA named Kobe Bryant the All-Star game MVP, pleasing many of the southern Californian fans in attendance. The MVP award is the second for Bryant, who also earned the award and received boos in his hometown Philadelphia.
Four days away from the NBA trade deadline, but no big deals seem close to completion. The New Jersey Nets seem to flip-flop between trading Jason Kidd and Vince Carter, with the Los Angeles Lakers continuing to push to acquire Kidd. The Portland Trailblazers are rumored to be a possible partner in a three-way deal.
The Seattle Sonics could send off both Rashard Lewis and Luke Ridnour in separate deals this week. One rumored deal sends Lewis to the New York Knicks for Nate Robinson and Channing Frye, which could give the Sonics a further logjam of developing options at center. The Atlanta Hawks hope to acquire Ridnour to help Speedy Claxton at the point guard position.
This weekend, Daily Basketball received a visual makeover, which hopefully provides an improvement to that old WordPress template. Feel free to leave us your feedback on the new look.

Gilbert Arenas fell awfully short of fulfilling his promise of scoring 50 points versus the Portland Trailblazers. While fans shouldn’t have expected the Trailblazers step up to the challenge, I thought game recaps said Arenas scored nine points in the first half — not in the game. Arenas has already said he plans to score 50 the next time the two teams meet, since “they won’t be expecting it”. He’s already messed that up, hasn’t he?
Ray Allen of the Seattle Sonics and Mehmet Okur of the Utah Jazz have been named as All-Star replacements for Steve Nash and Allen Iverson. The Jazz, who own the third-best record in the NBA, spent a few days without Sunday night representation because injured power forward Carlos Boozer won’t make it back in time.
NBA fans can expect bigger trades coming in the final days before the deadline, but there was a small deal between the Charlotte Bobcats and San Antonio Spurs. The Bobcats sent Melvin Ely to the Spurs for Eric Williams and a future second-rounder. The Spurs should find a big man to play next to T.D. and stick with him. Other teams would gladly take Francisco Elson or Jackie Butler if they don’t get enough playing time.
The Houston Rockets traded Scott Padgett to the Memphis Grizzlies for Jake Tsakalidis. The center averages 2.3 points and 2.8 rebounds in 11.2 minutes per game.
Jason Kidd may follow the recent trend of dropping out of the All-Star game due to injury. Kidd apparently strained his lower back, though that may just be a ploy to save himself from a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. Local newspapers report that several players, possibly Aaron McKie and Kwame Brown, are on the table for the Nets if they’d like to trade Kidd. Rod Thorn told reporters that discussions did indeed take place, but it was several weeks ago. “I’ve spoken to 27 teams over the past month. Some talks were initiated by them, some initiated by us.”
The Duke Blue Devils no longer hold a spot in the top #25, after a tough four-game losing streak. While Duke still ranks #26, it’s the first week in over 10 years where the Blue Devils were not ranked in the top 25 nationally.
Congratulations to Henry Abbott of True Hoop, whose blog was ranked number one in our rankings late last year. Abbott announced on his blog that he has sold True Hoop to ESPN, though he still runs the site and doesn’t expect much in the way of changes. “The various executives and editors at ESPN have been nice enough to make clear, even in writing, that they aren’t interested in monkeying in any profound way with the way things happen here.”
