April 3: Draft Busts day

In anticipation of “Make Up Your Own Holiday” Day on March 26, the one-man committee of Daily Basketball had dedicated April 3 as Draft Busts day, a time for mourning the team revitalizers that never were.

Why April 3, you ask? Look no further than Michael Olowokandi, who earned the honor despite the shortcomings of Kwame Brown and Pervis Ellison (look him up).

Michael Olowokandi Kwame Brown

April 3 is an yearly opportunity to scrutinize your horrible GM who picked the “project” big man over the proven NCAA floor leader. Once a year, take the time to unnecessarily write a rude, inconsiderate note and send it to your team’s scouts. After all, your grandmother could have drafted a better player.

Draft Busts Day is not limited to just #1 picks. After all, the New York Knicks haven’t had the #1 overall since Patrick Ewing, but plenty of Knicks fans dread getting their hopes crushed year after year.

Have an idea for another NBA holiday? Leave a comment below, or write a post about it. Daily Basketball is hosting Carnival of the NBA #55, and the deadline for submissions is March 24.

Big man is attractive for the NBA. “Getting a good Centre can get the champion” many people said that. However, it is totally difficult.

It seems to me that it takes a successful mentor (Abdul-Jabbar in LA, Ewing in Orlando) for the raw players to really develop. Howard and Bynum may have been great players anyway, but a great coach who’s “been there” definitely helps.
