VOTD 12/30 - Charles, did you lose your ball?

For any of you who have followed Charles Barkley’s golf game, this may be no surprise that Barkley couldn’t find his golf ball after teeing off. However, Barkley continues to lose his golf balls over and over again as groundskeepers run on to the fairway to steal the ball. Watch Barkley react as he faces accusations from his fellow golfers.

Jazz trade Giricek, 1st rounder for Kyle Korver

Just a day after the Utah Jazz reinstated Gordon Giricek for an argument with coach Jerry Sloan, the team traded the Croatian shooting guard to the Philadelphia Sixers for Kyle Korver. The Jazz also threw in a protected first-rounder for Korver.

On Thursday, Giricek, Sloan and Jazz GM Kevin O’Connor met to discuss the situation. The three came to the conclusion that Giricek should be reinstated. Sloan said he wanted the team to “move forward,” although it now looks like he meant that the team would continue without Giricek, whom the Jazz acquired from the Orlando Magic for DeShawn Stevenson during 2004 deadline trade.

Giricek was in uniform to play against the Los Angeles Lakers last night, but didn’t get in the game. It was speculated that this was because Giricek had not practiced with the team for eight days, but Giricek seemed unfazed that he didn’t get any minutes during a blowout loss to the Lakers — perhaps because he knew it was his last game with the team.

Giricek is in the last year of his contract, so he drew several possible suitors for a trade because he would give a team so salary cap flexibility.

Meanwhile, the Jazz acquire a much-needed three-point shooter. Although the team has several capable shooters, no Jazzman is a consistent three-point shooter. When Korver’s on the floor, defenses will have to choose between respecting his shot and doubling Boozer in the low post.

Both players are strongly offensive-minded, and neither will have a tremendous impact immediately, but both teams were looking to make a deal. After the Jazz were looking to make a trade after another Giricek/Sloan episode and a long losing streak, the Jazz wanted to try and shake up their roster. Philadelphia is looking for salary cap flexibility as they develop their young roster.

The two players should make their debut against each other, when the Jazz and Sixers play each other on Wednesday.

VOTD 12/28 - The Rain Man

Kurt of Forum Blue and Gold is maintaining True Hoop today. In a post discussing the decay of Shaquille O’Neal, he posted a video of The Big Aristotle during his prime. While thinking of other players who dominated the 90s, another now slow, overweight player came to mind.

Shawn Kemp has been out of the league for several years now, failed a couple comeback attempts, and is now the punchline of child support and paternity jokes. Not all that long ago, Kemp was a six-time All-Star, and helped Gary Payton lead his team to the NBA Finals before falling to another legend of the 90s.

VOTD 12/27 - An unexpected record (co-)holder

If you had to list off some of the top three point shooters in the NBA during the past 25 years, who’d come to mind? Reggie Miller, Ray Allen, Larry Bird, Brent Barry, Steve Kerr?

Kobe Bryant matched the feat and made nine straight three-pointers, but who else owns the record for most three-pointers in a game? No, not Antoine Walker, we’re talking made three-pointers.

The record (partially) belongs to Donyell Marshall. A serviceable but unspectacular veteran who has a 35% career shooting mark from beyond the arc. And he only reached that mark because he shot near or above 40% from 2002 to 2005.

Marshall made more three-pointers during a four-year span (2003-07) with the Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers than made made during the first 10 years of his career, and that includes one of the four “breakout” years. How’s that for a turnaround in long-range shooting ability?
