09/12 VotD - Bill Russell mixtape

Today, FIBA inducted 20 new members into their Hall of Fame. Among the inductees was Bill Russell. Amazingly, Russell earned 11 NBA championships in only 13 seasons, while averaging 22.5 rebounds per game. Blocks weren’t tallied during his career, but watching the mix below, you can tell he played like a man among boys on the court.

Note: You may want to crank up your own music on this one.

Friend’s note:

Where baseball and basketball are more the games of teenagers, golf is a prestigious sport adults associate with grace and dignity.

Thanks for the memories. Bill Russell the ultimate great teammate and in my opinion most intelligent player in the history of the game. Bdb

I’m a 55 yr old Laker fan (from 60-61 on) living now in Belgium. This brings back bitter-sweet memories. We played them 6 times in the Finals and couldn’t get it done. Still, the Celtics were the best…no shame to get beat by such a grest team. What this video doesn’t show much of, and something I clearly remember, is when Russell’s blocks went to an opponent and they tried a another shot, he’d block that shot as well. I distinctly remember one sequence at the old L.A. Sports Arena (so this would be pre-1967) with Russel blocking four shots by four DIFFERENT Lakers in succession. Boom-boom-boom-boom! The fourth, of course, resulted in a fast-break basket for the Celts. One of the greatest things I ever saw in sports.
