Larry Brown settled for $18 million

Sure, it’s ridiculous that anybody should get paid not to work, but Larry Brown will be paid at least $18.5 million of the remaining $53 million he had left on his contract with the New York Knicks. Brown has been rumored to be receiving somewhere between $20-$40 million, but terms have the buyout haven’t been announced.

The Supersonics are done in Seattle, unless private investors come up with a huge sum of money for a new arena. It doesn’t take much speculation to realize that the team will be moving to Oklahoma City as soon as the Hornets can move back to New Orleans.

Just after being featured as one of the NBA’s players who has fully recovered from injury, Kenyon Martin will be having surgery on what was originally his “good knee”.  Just a few minutes before tip-off, Martin was told by team doctors he needed an MRI which showed the need for the surgery.

Darius Miles will also be having surgery on his knee.

The NBA player’s labor union plans to take action against the ridiculously high technical fouls. “You say you want to deter it, curtail that kind of conduct on the court and now it’s kind of dipped down so the slightest little inclination … a guy throws his hands up, the refs are now calling a tech,” according to union representative Billy Hunter. Hunter also noted that players are fined for each technical foul they receive. There have been over twice as many technical fouls as last season, but for obviously more minor complaints from the players.

Need4Sheed.com has created a petition protesting the ridiculous Zero Tolerance Technical foul rule, which last night cost the Detroit Pistons a potential victory against the undefeated Utah Jazz.

In the effort to spare Rasheed Wallace, the team, and their fans, please take a second to sign the petition. Even if you don’t care for Wallace himself, the rule is causing anger from teams, fans, and bloggers around the league…

“Do you expect fans to sit in our seats and not make a peep when our team wins a game on a buzzer beating shot? No we can’t its the excitement of the game, we can’t help but root for our team. If we can’t keep quiet how do you expect a player to in the heat of battle?”

Currently, there are just over 1200 signatures but let’s try to raise it well above that.

Heat don’t compete in less than thrilling opener

Okay, so maybe the the game wasn’t that boring (see Tyrus Thomas), but the defending champions didn’t defend their title by losing to the Chicago Bulls by 42 points. Kirk Hinrich and Chris Duhon led the Bulls, who left the floor the the Miami Heat received their championship rings. The Heat’s loss was the largest margin ever by the defending champions in their opening game.

The Kobe Bryant-less Los Angeles Lakers came back from behind to defeat the Phoenix Suns. Lamar Odom put up 34 points, and Andrew Bynum and Maurice Evans put up promising numbers. Meanwhile, Leandro Barbosa was knocking down all sorts of shots for the Suns, which had Amare Stoudemire’s (six points in 12 minutes) regular season return spoiled.

After being waived by the New York Knicks, three teams have been named the front-runners for signing Jalen Rose. ESPN reports that the Suns, Heat, and Detroit Pistons are all debating making offers to the forward. In other Knicks news, the team has settled things with Larry Brown, with no announcement having been made on whether or not the former head coach will get his $60 million.

For the fantasy basketball owners out there, a few major injuries have kept players off the court:

Darius Songaila will be sitting out for the next couple months with a herniated disc in his back. In a team press release, the Washington Wizards announced that the power forward the need surgery.

Kobe Bryant didn’t play in the team’s opener against the Suns, but expects to return to action soon.

Dallas Maverick forward Devean George has been hospitalized with a stomach ailment. This isn’t the first time George has had the problem, so the situation is being monitored with caution.

Tyrus Thomas broke his nose in last night’s game against the Heat. “It’s cool. I’ve just got a headache,” he said. “I feel good about my performance.” Thomas will sit out and possibly return to Chicago to get a mask.

The Charlotte Bobcats center Primoz Brezec will miss the next two weeks recovering from dehydration and exhaustion after playing with the Slovenian national team this summer.
