Final USA Basketball cut announced

Unsurprisingly, Bruce Bowen did not make the final roster for the World Championships. Bowen has been playing a limited amount of minutes, which gave away that he would be the final cut for the team after Gilbert Arenas had sit out with a groin injury.

The Charlotte Bobcats unveiled their new alternate road jersey. The new jersey is “blue as the predominant color and accented by the team’s other official colors of Bobcats Orange, black and silver”.

Ron Artest started his community service hours for the biggest fight in NBA history. Artest took the time to read to children and explain his reason behind the fight. Artest claims that Ben Wallace started trouble and that he was the one to end it. “”I would always encourage you to protect yourself but in certain situations, if you can avoid them, avoid them.”

Bo Outlaw has been re-signed by the Orlando Magic, extending his second stint with the team. I was surprised to see that even though this will be Outlaw’s thirteenth season, he has never average double-figures in points or rebounds.

The New York Knicks are hoping to find some success after receiving a one year ultimatum. If the team doesn’t drastically improve, Isiah Thomas will lose his job as GM and head coach of the team. Stephon Marbury thinks that the extra pressure will help Thomas as well as the rest of the team work even harder.

Daily Basketball is going to be taking Friday (and possibly Saturday) off so make sure you check back Monday for a review of the weekend’s news.

Knicks made offer for Chris Webber

The Philadelphia Sixers went to the New York Knicks hoping to unload Chris Webber and his gigantic contract, but came back with only an offer of Quentin Richardson and Maurice Taylor. The Knicks would have had to throw in another player to complete the trade.

The New Jersey Nets have officially re-signed free agent Clifford Robinson. The team didn’t pick up Robinson’s option, but the team says the re-signing will give the team some added depth. If you haven’t already, check out more NBA doodles at this great NBA blog.

Cleveland Cavaliers GM Danny Ferry says that fan favorite Anderson Varejao’s foot injury isn’t serious. It’s been just a couple weeks since Varejao suffered a minor knee injury, and it isn’t hard to imagine that Ferry will recommed Varejao sits out international play after the 2008 Olympics.

Ruben Patterson has already begun talking trash at his new home with the Milwaukee Bucks. Patterson vows to work hard in practice and help motivate his teammates. More seriously (and realistically), Patterson claims that one guy that can’t stand to be defended by Patterson is Richard Hamilton, who helped eliminate the Bucks from the playoffs earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, the Bucks announced their new court design.

The Charlotte Bobcats have re-signed Jake Voskuhl to a new two-year deal. Also, the Sacramento Kings signed free agent center Loren Woods to a contract.

Team USA demolishes Korea, 116-63

LeBron James led Team USA to a 53-victory over Korea in their fifth exhibition game. James scored twenty-three points and thrilled the crowd with his many dunks. The game was over shortly after it started as Team USA had no struggles against a team with no NBA players. They began the game with a 9-2 run and never looked back.

Other news: The Seattle Sonics finalized their deal with Chris Wilcox. The three-year deal is worth $24 million. The Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors were the other teams strongly interested in Wilcox, but the best offer was Kurt Thomas.

Harrington could join Pacers soon

The Indiana Pacers have apparently been given the opportunity to acquire Al Harrington (and John Edwards) in exchange for a future draft pick. A trade exception would also be involved, but the team is no longer required to throw in almost $3 million cash. The decision could come any day whether Harrington will join the team or sign somewhere else.

Drew Gooden is going to re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The three-year contract is worth $23 million, which is substantially less than the $10 million a year deal he was originally looking for.

The USA Basketball team  is down to only one cut before the World Championships after Gilbert Arenas strained his  groin during practive.  Bruce Bowen seems to be the favorite to be cut this weekend, but USA Basketball may want to give Bowen a chance to play in the tournament as he will likely be too old  when the Olympics come around.

USA Basketball finished with a 4-0 record during exhibition play, after beating Lithuania 111-88. Carmelo Anthony returned from his hyperextended knee injury to score 19 points and Dwyane Wade has 10 points in the first quarter.

Eddie House joins New Jersey Nets

After having a career year with the Phoenix Suns, Eddie House has signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract to play for the New Jersey Nets. House made 123 three-pointers last year after filling a void left by the trades of Quentin Richardson and Joe Johnson.

Chris Wilcox is looking to sign a three-year deal with the Seattle Sonics. Contract negotiations are “productive” and could be for as much as $24 million.

The New Jersey Nets re-signed Clifford Robinson. Robinson was suspended during the NBA playoffs because of a drug violation, though team president Rod Thorn said Robinson was a popular member of the team (probably because of the drugs).

Tony Parker, Yao Ming (who came back early from his foot injury), and Dirk Nowitzki have been busy playing for their respective teams in the World Championships. All three have played well so far though statistics have shown players seem to play worse during the season after participation in Olympics and other events.

The Washington Wizards are unsure where they want Oleksiy Pecherov to be next season. Originally, Pecherov was going to return to play overseas for a couple years to develop, but has impressed team officials during summer league play.

Smith sent to Denver Nuggets

The Milwaukee Bucks have traded Joe Smith to the Denver Nuggets for former Jailblazer Ruben Patterson. The trade might be a sign that trading Jamaal Magliore isn’t going to happen in the immediate future, though the team still has Andrew Bogut, Charlie Villanueva, and Dan Gadzuric that can play the four or five position. Also, the Nuggets getting Smith may mean that Keith Van Horn won’t be joining the team.

The Seattle Sonics are going to continue their discussions with Chris Wilcox about the power forward re-signing with the team. The two sides have reported that negotiations have been productive so far and that Wilcox may longer end up in a sign-and-trade deal.

Steve Nash spent a day as a professional soccer player, practicing with the MLS team New York Red Bull. Nash grew up playing soccer, and participated with Amare Stoudemire in the Slam Dunk contest by kicking an alley-oop for Stoudemire. Nash has also participated in an batting practice in the past with the San Franciso Giants.

ABC Sports has team with ESPN for its upcoming broadcasts. Starting with the college football season coming in just a few short weeks, the broadcast team will now be ESPN on ABC.

The value of NBA teams has shot up over the past few years. If the Philadelphia Sixers end up being sold as rumored, it’s possible it could become the new record for the NBA at a price approaching a half-billion dollars.
