Nelson returns; USA advances

Daily Basketball is gone MIA a couple of times the last week, but here is a rough summary of what’s been going on:

Don Nelson is the new head coach of the Golden State Warriors, who haven’t made the playoffs since Nelson left the team a dozen or so years ago. Nelson’s contract is for three years and between $15-$18 million depending on bonuses included if the team returns to the postseason.

Team USA will face Greece in the next round of the World Championships. Barring an upset, they will then face the winner of Spain-Argentina. The German national team was eliminated by USA Basketball after Dirk Nowtizki had a modest fifteen points and Team USA went on a second-half run.

O.J. Mayo will be transfering to a new high school, Huntington High, for his senior year. This could be a sign that teammate Billy Walker will try to apply for the NBA Draft because he has completed his high school eligibility. This will be Mayo’s third high school, where he will team up with other prep phenom Patrick Patterson.

OTHER NEWS: The Phoenix Suns are expected to sign Jumaine Jones. The Utah Jazz have finally come to terms with draft pick Dee Brown. The Seattle Sonics are not close to signing Yotem Halperin, as previously reported by an international newspaper.

Team USA prepares to face Dirk, Germany

In case you missed it, Team USA beat Andrew Bogut and Australia and will face Dirk Nowitzki and Germany on Wednesday. For the record, the game is in the quarterfinal round, meaning that USA Basketball is hopefully just three games away from capturing the gold medal.

LeBron James will sport two tattoos during the game. Besides his hometown’s area code on his right arm, James had “Witness” tattooed onto his calf. You can guarantee that the tattoo will find it’s way in many Nike advertisements, as that has been a main catchphrase concerning the superstar.

While the Minnesota Timberwolves would like to sign free agent forward Reggie Evans, the team believes that Evans will end up re-signing with the Denver Nuggets.

Bonzi Wells is struggling to find a large contract and may have to sign a one-year contract. The Sacramento Kings offered him a five-year, $38 million deal.

Tubby Smith claims that Boston Celtics‘ rookie Rajon Rondo was no part of the team’s mediocre season last year. While Rondo has a knack for rebounding, Smith said that “when your point guard is your leading rebounder then you do have some issues.”

Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, and Josh Childress all had their contract options picked up by the Atlanta Hawks, meaning that they will join ten other small forwards (in addition to Speedy Claxton and Shelden Williams) on next year’s team.

NBA veteran Kenny Anderson is looking to make a return to the league, after playing overseas last season. Anderson most recently played for the Los Angeles Clippers and could end up as a training camp invitee somewhere this fall.

Pat Riley will continue to coach Heat

Pat Riley is excited to return for another season as the head coach of the Miami Heat. “After winning the championship, I realized there’s always something meaningful that happens in your life that becomes the primary point of your destiny,” said Riley.

The USA Basketball team blew out Senegal, 103-58. The team extended their unbeaten streak to five, after LeBron James scored 17 and Chris Bosh added 20. After creating a USA comeback victory over Italy, Dwyane Wade had an off night but was a fan favorite at the event.

In case you missed, the Al Harrington deal was finalized. Larry Bird and the Indiana Pacers still plan to make multiple more deals before the season begins, though they hope to avoid raising their payroll much.

Jay Williams, one of the top picks from the 2002 Draft, has been working out with the New Jersey Nets in a continued attempt to sign a guaranteed contract with an NBA team. Teams are reluctant to give a guaranteed deal because they believe many of his skills diminished after a motorcycle accident.

LaMarcus Aldridge will in fact miss part of his rookie season because of the surgery he has undergone on his shoulder. Early projections for his return are sometime near the end of Novemer.

The USA Basketball team has a break until the 27th, when they will face Australia.

Looking for basketball bloggers

If anybody out there would like to help blog for Daily Basketball, we’re looking to add some other people who can put up links, videos, or write features for the blog. If you’re interested in helping in any way, please leave a comment or send an e-mail to cchadmin (at) gmail.com.

There aren’t any minimum requirements as far as experience goes, as long as writing is clear and proper grammar is used. Bloggers can post as often (or rarely) as they like.

Al Harrington mess ending soon?

Well, there have been a few other bloggers (including Sam Rubenstein of Slam Online) that seem thoroughly confused by our explanation of the Al Harrington trade rumors. Our advice? Wait for an official press release. The new talk is that the Atlanta Hawks and Indiana Pacers have continued discussions and Harrington could possibly take a four-year, $35 million contract to the Pacers for a future draft pick.

The trade (with the Pacers) sounds like it is complete, and center John Edwards is also in the deal.

The USA Basketball team won their game against Slovenia and guaranteed themselves a spot in the World Championships’ “Sweet Sixteen”. A 114-95 victory extended their winning streak after a game in virtually all of the starters sat for much of the second half.

During LeBron James‘ free time, the superstar has been learning Mandarin Chinese. James has two goals: to help broaden his global personality, and to be able to talk with foreign reporters during the 2008 Olympics.

LaMarcus Aldridge is going to undergo minor surgery on his shoulder. A small ligament tear in his right shoulder is the cause of the surgery, but there’s no word yet on how how his recovery will affect his rookie season.

Meanwhile, Tony Parker will not need surgery after breaking his right index finger. Parker has to wear a splint on the finger for the next four to five weeks.

New Al Harrington trade rumors surface

While the Indiana Pacers still think they are in the running for Al Harrington, the Atlanta Hawks are talking about completing a multi-team trade. The Hawks would be getting the Denver NuggetsJoe Smith and send Harrington to the Golden State Warriors. The rumor out there is that there are either three or four teams involved and the deal could also include Mike Dunleavy, Jr. being sent to the Los Angeles Clippers and Corey Maggette being sent to Denver.

Josh Howard expects to receive an extension similar to that of Tayshaun Prince. A deal should be reached soon, or Howard will become a restricted free agent. Howard may go after even more money than Prince, since many of his stats are higher than the member of the Detroit Pistons‘ Fantastic Four.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are going to need to find some extra roster space after re-signing Drew Gooden and signing Scot Pollard. With the intent of bringing David Wesley to training camp, the team will exceed 15 players and likely have to make a couple cuts.

Team USA blew out China 121-90, led by Dwyane Wade. Wade scored 26, and there were other strong performances by Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard. The USA Basketball team will play Slovenia early Tuesday morning.
