Knicks get extra day to decide on Butler

The New York Knicks will have an extra day to decide whether or not they’ll match the Spurs offer to Jackie Butler. The Knicks have until Thursday to make their decision, but seem to be leaning against it as the team is now showing interest in signing Jared Jeffries because of his versatility.

After the team was rejected by John Salmons, the Phoenix Suns may go after Marcus Banks as their back up to MVP Steve Nash. The Arizona Republic is saying that Banks will likely have to choose between the Suns, the Miami Heat, and the Houston Rockets.

The less-than-thrilled Derek Fisher will be flying out to Utah to take his physical for the Jazz. Fisher hadn’t talked to any members of the Jazz organization about the trade until vice president of operations Kevin O’Connor flew out to talk to the guard. Fisher apparently had plans of being traded to other teams, but doesn’t have any problems with the Jazz.

The Denver Nuggets also have until Thursday to match the San Antonio Spurs offer to Francisco Elson. It looks like the team plans to do so after acquiring J.R. Smith from the Bulls, which filled their other need for a shooting guard. The Spurs may end up striking out on getting their center. The team lost Nazr Mohammed and has failed to get several other centers they’ve gone after.

Darius Songaila signed a five-year, $21-23 million contract with the Washington Wizards. The team has also been linked to DeShawn Stevenson, but Songaila may show that the team has changed their plans. Also, rookie Oleksiy Pecherov will probably spend at least a year overseas.

Bulls, Nuggets working on a trade

The Chicago Bulls plan to trade newly acquired guard J.R. Smith to the Denver Nuggets for Howard Eisley and two second-round picks. The Bulls would then waive Eisley so they would have the salary cap room to sign free agent forward Adrian Griffin.

After working out the trade with the Bulls, the Nuggets may let Francisco Elson sign with the San Antonio Spurs. Elson didn’t get play much towards the end of the season, and the team just gave Nene a new contract.

The Rocky Mountain News says the Nuggets are still trying to re-sign forward DerMarr Johnson. The team doesn’t have a lot of depth at shooting guard, just second-year player Julius Hodge and delinquent Ruben Patterson.

While at Alonzo Mourning’s charity game, Gary Payton says he’d like to return to play for the Miami Heat but that there have been no negotiations as of yet. James Posey doesn’t have a contract extension with the Heat planned yet, but will look to do so after exercising the last year of his contract. Also, Mourning has announced that he plans to return for another season with the Heat.
It looks like the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets will re-sign Rasual Butler. Multiple teams have shown interest in signing Butler, but all of the teams have found other options elsewhere.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are close to signing David Wesley to a contract. Wesley will turn 36 this year.

Iverson ready to leave Philadelphia

Allen Iverson says he would be fine staying with the team, but only if the Sixers wanted him back. The team has been looking to move their All-Star guard for several months now, as the team looks to make changes after failling to make the playoffs.

Kobe Bryant has had surgery on his knee and won’t be at this month’s USA Baskeball try outs. USA Basketball has said that he can still have the chance to play for the Olympic team in 2008. The surgery on Bryant’s knee was only for minor treatment, but he’ll need two or three months to recover.

The Detroit Pistons have come to terms with free agent scorer Flip Murray. The contract is a two-year, $3.6 million deal.

The Rocky Mountain Revue summer league began last night. The Utah Jazz will host the Spurs, Hawks, Sixers, Mavericks, and Sonics. Some games will be on NBA TV, if you’re desperate for live NBA action.

Pacers grab huge exception

As part of the deal that sent Peja Stojakovic to the Hornets, the Indiana Pacers have acquired a $7.5 million exception along with the rights to Andrew Betts, a former draft pick. The exception will improve the chances of landing Al Harrington if he isn’t sent to theĀ  Golden State Warriors.

The Houston Rockets traded for Kirk Snyder of the Hornets, giving away essentially nothing for the shooting. The deal consists of some cash and future considerations. Snyder had a solid year with the Hornets after being traded from the Utah Jazz, but the team was disappointed that Snyder hasn’t improved his skills much.

It’s easy to forget that Drew Gooden is on the free agent market. He’s probably best player next to Al Harrington that is still available. Neither party seems to be rushing conversations. The Cleveland Cavaliers haven’t made any serious offer, but Drew Gooden is hoping to stay with the team.

Marcus Banks might be the reason negotiations are being held up. Several other teams have considered Banks, but it seems that now the Cavaliers are the only other team seriously interested.

After a solid playoff performance by Jared Jeffries, the Washington Wizards figured they may have to pay a little extra to keep the forward. Now, though, he may settle for a $2.8 million contract for the next year — and then test free agency again since he hasn’t gotten the offers he has been hoping for.

Yesterday, it was incorrectly said that John Salmons planned on going to the Phoenix Suns. Salmons has made his official (we think) decision and we’ll play for the Toronto Raptors next season.

Also, Isiah Thomas says the odds of the Knicks re-signing Jackie Butler are only “50-50″. The team is apparently happy with the overpaid centers who can’t rebound and they are already way over the salary cap. Either way, the Spurs have another option since they signed Franciso Elson to an offer sheet.

Keith Bogans will be back with the Orlando Magic, but the team may let DeShawn Stevenson go. After drafting J.J. Redick, the team may be after a cheaper option to back up their lottery pick.

Bosh, Pierce, Eddie Jordan sign extensions

Chris Bosh has signed the same type of extension contract that LeBron James and Dwyane Wade have all done. Bosh has said he’d love to stay with the Toronto Raptors, which means he means he must think the team is going in the right direction.

Carmelo Anthony said that his contract extension with the Denver Nuggets is for five years, $80-million — it was speculated before that he was set to sign a three-year deal that James, Wade, and now Bosh will be signing.

Head coach of the Washington Wizards, Eddie Jordan, will sign an extension to stay with the team for the next three seasons. The team has done well since Jordan was hired, but fell short in the playoffs this year after running into LeBron Jame’s in the first round of the playoffs.

The Raptors signed Maccabi Tel Aviv guard Anthony Parker to a guaranteed three-year deal. Parker led Maccabi Tel Aviv to a preseason victory over the Raptors last season, which included Parker hitting the gamewinning shot.

Jarron Collins is planning to re-sign with the Utah Jazz. Because the deal has not been announced yet, terms of the deal were released.

The San Antonio Spurs are going to sign point guard Jacque Vaughn. The deal throws in another veteran backcourt player to play behind young stars Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. The Spurs also signed New York Knicks big man Jackie Butler to an offer sheet, but the Knicks plan to match the deal.

Daily Basketball; Wade follows James

The CenterCourt Hoops blog will now also go under the name Daily Basketball. Look for an update to the design of the blog coming soon — you can also access this blog by going to www.dailybasketball.com.

Dwyane Wade is going to be signing a different contract than the one that was previously agreed on between him and the Miami Heat. Wade will sign the same type of contract LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony have announced, giving him the option to potentially make more money in his next contract.

The Phoenix Suns are about to complete a trade that will bring them John Salmons from the Sixers. The Suns have had good luck with their swingman, acquiring players like Raja Bell and Eddie House who have had great success next to MVP Steve Nash.

Allen Iverson won’t be headed to the Golden State Warriors. The team has apparently lost interest because they are working on a deal to get Al Harrington from the Atlanta Hawks.

There’s some more news concerning Team USA. Kirk Hinrich will now try out for the team, after he originally declined the invitation. J.J. Redick won’t be at the try outs, though, because of his back injury. Gilbert Arenas is desperate to make the team, and says he’s been working on the international-range three-point shot. The tryouts begin a week from today.

Several teams are trying to trade for Jamal Magliore. The former all-star had a quiet season in Milwaukee, and the team plans to trade him because they have Andrew Bogut to play down low.

The NBA has set their salary cap at $53.135 million for the following season.
